Trail Tech Voyager GPS

Wow, Trail Tech just released a GPS system. Called the Trail Tech Voyager GPS, this system is full integrated and bike specific, built for motorcycles.

Question: Voyager kits include physical sensors, magnets, and other cables. Why does the unit need this if it’s a GPS?

Answer: You can use Voyager handheld without any sensors connected. However, physically bolting Voyager to your vehicle provides many advantages over what you are used to in a “standard” GPS.

1. Power from the machine enables several integration features, such as extended run-time and maintenance-free charging. (Voyager can be run using only the internal battery and charged with a wall charger.)
2. The engine temperature sensor monitors the health of your machine and enables two major features: engine temperature diagnostics and over-temp warning LEDs.
3. The ignition sensor tells Voyager when the engine is running. This enables logging of tracks only when engine is running and tachometer display features.
4. The wheel sensor can also control when to log, and provides a more accurate odometer than GPS. See next question.

Question: Do I really need a wheel sensor? “Standard” GPS units get along just fine without one.

Answer: All speed/distance data can be gathered from either GPS or the wheel sensor. Voyager kits provide a wheel sensor for several reasons:

1. When using a wheel sensor, Voyager knows to stop logging when the vehicle stops moving. When you start rolling again, the wheel sensor tells Voyager which starts logging again (without a GPS induced lag.)
2. The wheel sensor will track distance regardless of GPS conditions. This is important under several circumstances:
   1. GPS cannot tell the difference between a motorcycle moving under its own power or in the back of a truck.
   2. The GPS signal can be lost, especially around metal structures or in tunnels. With no signal, speed and distance accuracy is lost.
   3. GPS cannot see small changes in elevation (i.e. whoops and ruts.) Over time this will create significant odometer error.
   4. GPS is accurate while travelling in straight lines at constant velocity. However, tight, fast corners will cause the GPS to skip over part of your path. Over time this will contribute to odometer error.
3. Trail Tech believes an accurate odometer and hour meter are critical features. To maintain this accuracy, kits are provided with a wheel sensor included.

Question: Can Voyager use GPX files?

Answer: Yes, GPX (GPS Exchange Format) files are the main format that Voyager uses. Import and export GPX files directly from Voyager using the accessible waterproof MicroSD memory card slot. Download new GPX trails directly from OHVtrails.net and ride new areas with confidence. GPX also works well with Google Earth™,GPSBabel.org, the Trail Tech's GPX Editor software and many other resources.

GPX (the GPS Exchange Format) is a light-weight XML data format for the interchange of GPS data (waypoints, routes, and tracks) between applications and Web services on the Internet. GPX is being used by dozens of software programs and Web services for GPS data exchange, mapping, and geocaching.

Question: Does Voyager have topo maps?

Answer: On the trail, OHV (off-highway vehicle) riders do not typically utilize elevation data found on topo maps; instead, topo maps are used because of trail route information. Topo maps are mostly based on aerial photos from the 1950’s and 1960’s, so many are out of date and inaccurate. While some updated topo maps are available, the efforts to restore them focus on hiking trails, not OHV trails.

Because topo maps are not particularly well suited for use on OHV trails, Voyager provides a better means of collecting, displaying and sharing up-to-date OHV trail information. Routes may be imported into Voyager from standard GPX files, or exported for later review and sharing. Using Voyager’s trail-centric approach, riders can enjoy a superior experience using up-to-date trail maps.

You can find up-to-date trail information at Trail Tech’s OHV map website: www.OHVtrails.net. There you can plan your rides by overlaying a library of OHV trails and roads on top of detailed topographical maps and satellite images courtesy of Google Earth™. Create your own custom trail collection and upload it to your Voyager GPS dashboard. While OHVtrails.net currently covers only North America, it is being actively developed for other parts of the world. OHVtrails.net is provided free of charge for all to use.

Question: How many track points can Voyager hold?

Answer:

You can have up to 200 waypoints.

You can also have 1 track with 72,500 points (or up to 300 tracks with 241 points, or some hybrid.)

You can also have 1 route with 72,500 points (or up to 300 routes with 241 points, or some hybrid.)

Route and track memory are independent (e.g. you can have up to 72,500+72,500=145,000 points total if track and route memory are both full.)

FACTOID: Tire Weights

I was hefting around some tires here at the shop today and noticed that the Avon Distanzias are heavy! Very heavy! So, I weighed them and compared them to the Conti SM

Conclusion- for a DRZ or other lighter weight street supermoto, a 4 lb difference on the rear and almost a lb on the front is no small amount of lard to be carrying around on such a slim bike.

Yoshimura and BMW are two brands you may not always think of as making the perfect cocktail to drown out your earthly sorrows, but think again and throw a little sushi into your sourkraut- you never know, it just might taste great.

Yoshimura did their homework and came up with some interesting parts for the BMW S1000R. And why not? No one else is making them.

CRG Arrow Mirrors

Constructors Racing Group (CRG) recently put out their new Arrow Mirrors. The CRG Arrow Mirrors are some solid bar end mirrors, ideal for sport bikes, standard, naked and supermoto.

The Arrow mirrors fit to standard 7/8 bars and can either mount to the bar itself on the outside or inside of your grip, or to a bar end, or to a CRG mirror adaptor

These mirrors are solid and have a good feel to them. They seem to be made out of the same metal as the ever-popular classic CRG bar end mirrors.

Felt HOT Wheels Sixty-8 Cruiser

One hot, I mean, cool bike

Felt makes some pretty cool cruisers. Some may even think they're rad. Perhaps the "king of cool", Felt's "HOT Wheels Sixty-8 Cruiser" model is the epitome of a custom cruiser bicycle in a low-rider style, made awsomely. Known for their use of huge fat tires, the Hot Wheels model is no exception, with the big fat Felt "Thick Brick" white-wall tires front and back. While not quite as huge as the massive 3 inchers on the El Guapo, the Hot Wheels holds it own with a custom paint job, fabricator style framing, disc brakes front and rear and low straight like handle bars. . I like to picture myself riding this bike on a hot and sunny day, in rush hour traffic, on one of my busier downtown boulevards. I'm wearing a big flat bill cap, big black sunglasses, big tats down my arms, giant comb sticking out the back of my jeans and I have this giant ice cream cone in one hand. Then I slide up to this red light where two dudes on Harleys are sweltering in their leathers and I just look over at them and nod. For 8 years, Motostrano has subscribed to a review service that allows our customers to openly and honestly rate their experience with our company. Unlike other companies, we have no control of the reviews there and can't edit bad ones or good onces, as the whole thing is run independently by Yahoo. We review these reviews constantly to gauge how we are doing. Most customers don't review us at all. Fortunately , most reviews are positive and we've maintained a 98% or 99% positive feedback status for the past 8 years. We've had our fair share of negative reviews too, and to be perfectly honestly with, the really bad reviews are usually about things like men's underwear or similar products. So it's always nice to get a really nice review like this one today:

"Little story of how my trip snuck up and bit me in the ass and Motostrano helped a fella out.

I was going on a trip with some friends that we had been planning for ‘bout 3-months when a week before D-day I realize I needed an exhaust for my bike and hadn’t even ordered it yet. Research had been done and the exhaust was already removed, but I got busy before I tracked down a decent price.

I thought I was going to have to pay full retail price locally in order to get it with enough time to install it and we all know that just plain sucks. I talked to my local guy who was almost as helpful as a bagful-of-assholes. So back to the interweb I went surfing, floating and slowly drowning then I stumbled on to Motostrano.com. Not only did the “About Us” page say they cared about customers but the price was the best I had found. I figured what the hell I might as give well them try. Gonna make an assumption and say that we all hate doing things twice, but I figured if I needed to I could put the stock exhaust back on then tear it off and install the new one when I got back, whatever.

So, I ordered it on a Saturday w/ overnight shipping and sent an email asking them to “please notify me if there is any problem and it will not ship by Wednesday at the latest.” Went to work Monday with full expectations of calling them on my lunch, them saying that they would have to get back to me, then killing a couple more days playing phone tag only to have it ship out 2-days too late with no hope of using the overnight shipping charge I already paid for; or something to that effect. However, they actually called me (3-minutes after they opened Monday) and told me it was at another warehouse and would require special shipping to reach them in time to fit my timeline.

Long story shortened up just a bit, I ended up getting the whole kit with 2-days to spare because of their great service and fast shipping. Like my wife, you too may be thinking “two overnight shipping charges was a heavy price to pay for piss poor planning.” But little does she know I still came out $250 less than going with my local shop who wouldn't even guarantee that it would be here on time.

Anyway, sorry if this was long winded but I don’t normally do reviews and the fact that I made it on my trip without doing work twice and saved 250 bones in the process makes me giddy as a school girl. Bottom line: It was an awesome product at a kick-ass price with excellent customer service. Give ‘em a shot, I did and now I’ll always check them first."

2010 Supermoto USA NW Series Schedule

Its that time again, the start of race season where you look at your calendar
and say where the hell is the race schedule? The lack of a published schedule
is making every one ansty and rumors are flying around as to what is going on
within our community.

Let me give you the skinny on what is going on with the Supermoto USA NW series.
We have reestablished our relationship with the management of the Pacific GP facility.
PGP will continue to be our "home" track and is open for supermoto practice daily
(see pacificgp.com for exact details).

PGP is also establishing a local series to run exclusively at PGP, utilizing the SMUSA NW rule book and class structure.
In fact, our may 16th event will share points between the regional series and the pgp series.
SMUSA NW could not be happier to have this opportunity to share in the utilization of this top notch
facility and in the benefits of the consistency of a well established rulebook.

In additon to the local series, SMUSA NW will go back to its roots in covering the region. We will be offering
6 different facilties over the course of the year for your racing enjoyment. Everywhere from PGP, to
Evergreen Speedway with the monster trucks to Renegade Raceways in Yakima to our keynote event @ EK days in July.

Its not without trepidation that we undertake this endeavor (go to wikpedia.org to look up those words if you must).
We know that the economy sucks for everyone. We know there has been some infighting in the community
about certain facilities and certain personalities (myself included!).

We also know this this is a make or break season for our entire sport. There is no pro series
(or very limited) this year and groups all across the country are shrinking.
There are pockets of growth, we are hoping to rekindle this interest and the participation our area.

We are also aware that now you as a rider have choices, we are no longer the exclusive source of Supermoto
in the Washington area. Being a supermoto rider in Washington no longer means you have to be a racer,
with the construction of the excellent facility at PGP, many are making to choice to be track day riders
and forgo racing all together, or only choosing to race events that are within x miles of their homes.

We are well aware that all the possibilities could lead to a dilution of the racer pool, to the point
that no series could be successful. We at SMUSA NW, WHR Motorsports and Pacific GP are fighting hard to
prevent this. We want to ensure our sports survival locally by whatever means we can.
Its your job as a racer to show up and (and bring friends to spectate or try it out) support the races
that you can, so you will have the opportunity to race again next year.

So, enough with the doom and gloom, lets get to the fun part. Racing.

Supermoto Nation to grow Supermoto in America

Supermoto Nation officially launched as a new company committed to growing the motorcycle category of supermoto in America. In addition to announcing the company, Supermoto Nation's web site and Facebook page are now live. The web site and Facebook page will serve as a central point for people interested in getting started riding or racing supermoto.

The primary focus of Supermoto Nation will be to build an entertaining, innovative and successful professional supermoto series in America. In addition, the company will help leverage all the regional efforts and focus attention on the various groups and individuals committed to supporting and growing supermoto.

The name (Supermoto Nation) was selected to capture the potential of the sport of supermoto and to create excitement about this absolutely incredible motor sport. The name represents the future of supermoto and what is possible when people who are passionate about something take on building a supermoto nation.

"Originally this all started as an effort to figure out a way to salvage the Pro Supermoto Racing Series - no small undertaking in this economy. But as I continued to work on developing the series, I realized that it was going to take more than just a professional race series to properly promote supermoto in America. While some of the pieces exist today, there are a few elements that need to be added and everything has to be pulled together into a cohesive and compelling package. A package that builds the fan base, educates future customers about supermoto-style bikes and accessories, and encourages new participants to want to get involved in riding and racing supermoto," commented Ed Kuhlenkamp, founder and owner of Supermoto Nation.

Supermoto Nation is in the process of exploring the likelihood of being able to proceed with developing a true national race series in 2010 and determining what that series will look like. Preliminary discussions have taken place with local promoters and sponsors around the country. Supermoto Nation is confident that it is still possible to have a series this year with the right marketing partners. It is extremely exciting, fairly easy to locate events near major metropolitan areas and has always produced excellent ratings when televised."

The new Supermoto Nation web site will focus primarily on the professional racers, and teams involved in the series. In addition, it will also serve as a destination site for people interested in learning more about how to get started riding or racing supermoto. 1st Annual Pure MX Racer Warm-Up

Concept: Pure MX will host the first ever racer warm up for Lake Whitney & Oak Hill. 3 days of racer preparation with overseen timed laps, organized sprint motos, pursuits, racer critique and advice. General practice sessions will be held each day with organized racer training running late morning to early afternoon. Rider advice & competition pointers will be discussed with each racer individually. Open discussion at the end of each day for parents and participants.

Merge racing will be on-site to help with suspension & overall bike set up. Some of the Merge Technologies racers will also be participating in the warm-up, including Honda Houston rider Jeremy Kress and Suzuki rider Jeremy Martin.

Goal: Our main objective is to provide racers with the ultimate training preparation for the big day(s). We feel that racing encompasses both the physical as well as the mental aspect of competition. By providing this type of racer training format, we hope to better prepare our young riders to effectively compete on any level.

About the track: Pure MX Park was formed in January of 2010 by former racer Doni Wanat. Doni has been on riding scene for sometime starting in the early 90’s racing Supercross & outdoors as a privateer. Most recently Doni has been the manager & rider on the Rockstar Hart & Huntington Supermoto team, where he finished in the top ten in points for the last 4 years. Now he is here in Texas, sharing his riding and mx industry experience, all while living the dream of owning a motocross training facility.

The track is 1 ½ miles long with 11 tabletops, whoop section, elevation changes and plenty of rough track for training. The terrain is sandy loam with a red clay base which has been very forgiving during this wet Texas winter. There are currently 8 RV water hookups (electrical coming soon), and a bike washing station. Jump faces are groomed daily. Palestine is under 15 minutes away with many hotels, restaurants, Walmart and Lowes. Lake Whitney is 90 minutes west of the track. Space is limited, so early sign up is encouraged.
