UEM: Supermoto Championship: Open Class with qualifying system

ORINO, 26 May 2007 – Based on the great development of the European Open SuperMoto Championship and the big number of entries (always between 40 and 50), starting from next weekend in France, Villars Sous Ecot, a qualifying system for the Open Class will be installed.

The second free practise will be used as a timed practise and the top 32 will take part in the race.

This will help the development of our sport and will permit more riders to have a chance.

FIM: Van Den Bosch and Delepine on pole for first night time Supermoto GP

ORINO, 25 May 2007- The Oval Lingotto in the centre of Torino finally showed all its beauty during the opening day of the FIM Supermoto Grand Prix of Italy.
After a very hot afternoon, Saturday evening and night were a little bit wet and cold, but nothing could prevent the two fastest Supermoto riders of the day from clocking the pole.

Thierry Van Den Bosch was the fastest in the S1 class, as Gerald Delepine clocked the quickest lap in the S2.

In the European series, Frenchman Baptiste Rheims was the fastest S3 racer, while Petr Vorlicek owned the Open class thanks to a flying lap.

S1

Aprilia Off Road’s riders Thierry Van Den Bosch and Jerome Giraudo fought for pole since they first entered the 1200 metre track, but it was countryman Adrien Chareyre of CH Husqvarna snatching the pole at half session distance.
The one minute barrier was still a solid rock, but VDB made to break it with one minute to go. No one else was able to get closer to the defending Champion, who was the only man on track lapping faster than one minute.
Adrien Chareyre tried his best and finished second, keeping a very solid Ivan Lazzarini of Yamaha Evolution behind in third.
Lazza was also the fastest home rider, followed by Jerome Giraudo in fourth, closing the front row. Thomas Chareyre of CH Husqvarna was dramatically close to Giraudo, but finished fifth fastest ahead of TM factory’s Fabio Balducci.
2005 World Champion Boris Chambon was seventh fastest, while last year’s S2 World Champion Bernd Hiemer rounded off the top ten.

S2

When the session started, Luca Minutilli of H2O Racing stormed into the track and clocked the provisional pole, but it was not going to last.
A very fast Attilio Pignotti of KTM Italia Miglio was quick to snatch the pole from countryman Minutilli, as Pignotti aims at increasing his lead in the Championship.
CH Husqvarna’s Gerald Delepine broke the Italian’s record, but an impressive Nestor Jorge squeezed his BQR Spain Aprilia to clock a faster lap than Delepine’s one.
The time sheets looked all settled for just a bit, then Delepine, Christian Iddon of Aprilia Off Road and Pignotti started a personal challenge for pole that took the crowd’s breath away.
Delepine improved his previous lap to a very fast 1:00.662, leaving Pignotti behind in second by less than two tenths of a second. Iddon made it to third, with Husaberg WP Ipa’s Robert Baraccani completing the front row.
Max Verderosa will open the second row, and looked ready for a solid race on Saturday, but a very dangerous Davide Gozzini will start right next to him. Marcel Goetz rounded off the top ten, as KTM fellow rider Ales Hlad was 14th fastest.
Debutant Elia Sammartin was 19th fastest, less than two seconds off the pole.

UEM-EUROPEAN SUPERMOTO CHAMPIONSHIP

Baptiste Rheims was the fastest of the S3 riders, and will open the front row tomorrow, in the second race of the UEM European Supermoto Championship. But Italian Tommaso Iacoboni was dramatically close –the gap was just 12 thousandths of a second- and he will surely give chase tomorrow. Fabio Lavetti was seven tenths off the pole, but made it to the front row, which finished with TM mounted Francesco Bianconi. Brit Chris Hodgson was fifth fastest.

There was all Petr Vorlicek’s experience in today’s pole, and the Championship leader looked all set on his second victory of the season. Austrian Heino Meusburger will start next to him tomorrow, but being also next to Slovenian Uros Nastran –third- will make it a very hot start for Heino. Beat Erne will complete the front row, as Luca De Angelis will open the second row from fifth place.

THE EVENT’S SCHEDULE

The first night time Supermoto Grand Prix will begin tomorrow –Saturday May 26- with the opening moto of the S2 class at 4.55 pm. The S1 class will start at 7.55 pm, whereas the European Championship will begin at 2.55 pm with the Open class.

GEARTALK: Supermoto Protective Clothing Part 1: Leather Suits

What type of protective clothing should you get?

Supermoto racing or riding has its own unique set of riding conditions and with those come a whole set of protective gear issues not found in other sports or activities.

For racers- we're talking about tracks with both asphault and dirt terrain, typically tighter tracks at lower speeds than roadracing and greater chances of contact between bikes during a race. A supermoto track will typically have one or two long straights, a lot of tight twisty sections, a few good jumps either in the dirt or by steel ramp and, for the pros, even a few odd obstacles like tunnels, un-even pavement and other stuff thrown in for fun. Many tracks are built in parking lots where run-off room is scarce- ie. the chances of running off and crashing into a chain link fence pole is considerably higher in supermoto. Rider position is usually more upright, yet all over the bike. Both feet will often come off the pegs on either side, with one foot stuck out forward for extra support in a sliding turn.

All of these conditions call for a unique and purpose-made protective gear system designed to protect the rider while also doing something to keep the rider comfortable when they aren't busy crashing.

It's important to note at the start here that the S1 World Championship pro racers in Europe and abroad are required by organization rules to wear a one piece leather suit for all races. Two piece set-ups like the Troy Lee Designs leather pant and jersey set-up are prohibited. Full leather suits made of either cowhide, kangaroo or goat are required. In the US, on the other hand, you can run light weight MX nylon pants and honestly I don't even know if we require any real protection under that stuff. A real shame really- when you consider we've retired a good many racers to crashes in Supermoto just in the last few years.

Although Motostrano offers various two piece SM protection set-ups, if you ask us, we'll recommend a full leather supermoto suit like the Alpinestars S1 Supermoto suit when it comes right down to it, no matter what the conditions. Yes, the two piece leather pants and upper body protectors are more comfortable, particularly in the heat, but they just won't protect your skin as well as a one piece leather suit if you get off on asphault doing 65 mph. On the other hand, leather is heavy. Between 12-20 lbs for a typical higher end suit.

I was at an Italian Championship race one year in Latina. Heat temp in the pits alone was unbearable to the point that just watching the race I had to keep pouring water on me just to keep standing up. After the race, former World Champion Max Manzo came into the pits, sick from the heat, collapsed off the bike and then vomited all over his seat, barely able to stand. If he had been wearing an MX style gear set-up, he may have been a little better off. So, there are trade-offs, no doubt.

At the present time, the very best Supermoto suit on the market for the money is the Alpinestars S1 suit, developed by Alpinestars from years of research and testing. The suit is sort of a hybrid suit of leather and textile mesh, with an integrated GP back protector zipped into the back of the suit. You've got mesh panels on the front area to cool off the torso, leather on the arms and legs and butt. The zipped in back protector also acts as an exhaust system for hot air coming out the back.

Getting back to the two piece set-ups, as by TLD or Thor. Comfort is certainly their high point, with protection being their low. They're certainly a huge step up from standard MX gear, no doubt about it. They're main fault lies in the two piece design. Depending on how you crash, when you crash, the two piece design means you're very likely to burn the hell out of your skin any where on your torso.

You don't have to get a purpose-built supermoto suit. Plenty of roadracing suits will do the trick, though supermoto suits are designed for an up-right riding position and typically have room for a full-blown knee brace. Things to look for in a suit would first be quality of the leather and stitching. We've seen low end suits literally come apart in a low speed crash. Make sure what ever you get is double stitched with at least 1.2 to 1.4 mm leather. Since you're going to be traveling at speeds well under what a roadrace bike typically goes at, you'll want as much ventilation as possible. Hybrid leather/textile suits are ideal, a well-perforated suit like the Alpinestars S-Moto suit is a great choice.

Make sure your suit has integrated CE approved armor in key areas like the shoulders, elbows, knees. Padding in the hips is a great idea as well. You can upgrade your armor by buying padded shorts, chest protection and back protection like the stuff we sell by TPRO and Alpinestars.

For more information on selecting a suit, read our leather suit buying guide.

Future installments of this blog post will include head to toe protection and a talk on each of them, including: back protectors, knee braces, boots, protector jackets, gloves, kneck protection, eyewear and anything else we can think of that's designed to protect your bones and skin.

AMA: Rockstar/H&H/Motostrano Race Report

Round one in the AMA Supermoto Championship took place this last weekend
at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in St. Louis, MO and announced that
the new Rockstar/Hart & Huntington team is going to present a definite
challenge for the podium positions this year!

Racing in the Unlimited class, Travis Marks, #64 and Doni Wanat #89 gave
the leaders more than a little competition on their KTMs. Marks, who joined
the team when Rockstar/Hart & Huntington and Team JSTracing merged
during the off season, finished a strong 6th despite taking a spill in the dirt
section and having a small collision with the French Husqavarna rider
Belleraphone. Wanat’s getting faster every time he comes out and pushed the
#8 position Mike Bergman through the track, finishing only fractions of a
second behind him in 9th place. He’s been practicing hard in the off season
and it shows.

Tyler Evans, #53, a Rockstar Supercross racer, did very well in his first AMA
Supermoto event and second ever Supermoto race. Evans, having some
mechanical issues in the qualifying race and no points from last year, started in
the last position in the grid but pulled up through the ranks to finish 14th in
the Premier class, just behind Burton. After some modifications to the bike, we
expect some great finishes from him this season.

Although Carey Hart, # 46, was still out of commission due to a broken wrist
obtained at the Stateline race, we expect he’ll be ready to go for the June 3rd
race at Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ. We know we’ll see great results from
him. See you there!

We would like to thank our sponsors for all their support,

FIM: SuperMoto arrives to Torino for this Saturday's Grand Prix

FUNCHAL, 21 May 2007- With the season opener of Castelletto di Branduzzo being far behind the FIM Supermoto World Championship’s shoulder, it is time to get into the second round of the series, to be held in Torino this Friday and Saturday.

The Grand Prix of Italy will once again host the UEM European Supermoto Championship, that will be held together with the World Championship for the rest of the season.

In a brand new location –the Oval Lingotto- World series leaders Thierry Van Den Bosch and Attilio Pignotti will fight hard to stop the attacks of runner up’s Adrien Chareyre and Gerald Delepine.

In the European Championship, S3 series leader Elia Sammartin will hand the top spot to Riccardo Peroni, as he will switch to S2; in the Open class, leader Petr Vorlicek has a safe advantage over Alessandro Tognaccini, second but racing on home soil this weekend.

S1

It was a great start to the season for Aprilia Off Road’s Thierry Van Den Bosch; at his second year with the team, defending Champ VDB’s two moto wins demonstrated an incredible confidence, but also young gun Adrien Chareyre was a solid contender.
Debuting with factory Team CH Husqvarna, Chareyre finished two times second, both times ahead of his brother and team mate Thomas.
Aprilia’s Jerome Giraudo missed the podium by eight points and is now fourth in the points standings; the 26 year old from Nice will surely make up for that in Torino, as he aims at entering the wrestle for his second Title as soon as possible.
It will be a long fight though, that will maybe last for all the nine rounds of the series; Italians Massimo Beltrami and Ivan Lazzarini are just one point away from Giraudo, and their home event is definitely the chance to overtake the Frenchman.
KTM mounted Bernd Hiemer had a tough first GP, but his talent can push him up in the standings right from this weekend.
Castelletto was tough for other two World Champions like Hiemer, Boris Chambon and Eddy Seel, who both missed the top ten; but that is where they want to climb this Saturday.

S2

The FIM Supermoto Grand Prix of Europe had a bitter taste for TM factory’s Davide Gozzini, who was all set on winning both moto’s, but had to retire from the final.
KTM Italia Team Miglio’s Attilio Pignotti was the winner of the season opener, which was also the Italian’s maiden GP victory, as Husqvarna CH’s Gerald Delepine rode to a strong second place.
Gozzini will be surely motivated to climb up the standings with more wins on the Oval Lingotto, but Aprilia Off Road’s Christian Iddon will be on his track, as the Brit finally tasted his maiden moto victory in Castelletto.
He wants more, to make some noise in the wrestle for the crown, which finished in fourth place for him last year.
Motoracing’s Slovenian Ales Hlad was just consistent in the first round, finishing fourth overall, but he will try to come back stronger by Friday, to start winning GP’s as he did in Greece last year for the first time.
With Lorenzo Mariani completing the top five, Supermoto veterans Marcel Goetz and Max Verderosa round off the top ten, but now it is time for them to come back up.
On the other hand, a young gun will make his debut in the series at Torino; it is Italian Elia Sammartin, winner of the first round of the European S3 series, who will ride the KTM’s of Team Motorbike Cinti.

UEM-EUROPEAN SUPERMOTO CHAMPIONSHIP

After a successful debut of the European Series on the World Championship ground, the circus will be back this Friday and Saturday in Torino.

With Sammartin moving to the World Championship, Riccardo Peroni will have the S3 lead in his hands. But there is a danger just one point behind him, in the shape of Tommaso Iacoboni, who is smelling the Title since Castelletto. Frenchman Baptiste Rheims showed to be a consistent rider who can easily aim at the top three, while Belgian Olivier Scheen and Brit Chris Hodgson are still getting to grips with the series, where both of them are debuting.

Runner up last year, Petr Vorlicek is now on top of the EC-Open standings with 12 points more than runner up Alessandro Tognaccini. The Italian will surely give chase this weekend, but so will Luca De Angelis, Uros Nastran and Heino Meusburger, who all share the same score of 38 points. It was already a dogfight in Castelletto, and it will be even harder in Torino, with Belgian Lionel Deridder looking forward to joining his rivals on the battlefield.

THE OVAL LINGOTTO AND TORINO

DBO and Magic For Fun organized a supreme scenery for this second round of the season, turning the location of the 2006 Olympic Winter Games into a Supermoto arena with a huge illumination, for the first night-time Supermoto GP.
The circuit will be more than 1200 metre long, including a 300 metre long off road section, that will be a key factor in the result of the race. The average width will be 8 metres.

Torino’s city centre is just 500 metres away from the Oval Lingotto, adding a special value to the location of this second GP.
The area of Lingotto has a solid connection with the Italian history, as it hosted a branch of FIAT -one of the most famous Italian car manufacturers- in the twenties. It was actually inaugurated in 1923, in front of the Italian king Vittorio Emanuele II.
Some of the most important cars in the history of FIAT passed by the Lingotto: the Torpedo, the Balilla and the Topolino.
This branch was closed in 1982, which was also the year when Italy won the Football World Cup.
Italy is also arts, and Italian architect Renzo Piano placed his “Bolla” - a surreal facility made of steel and crystal- in the area of Lingotto.

THE EVENT’S SCHEDULE

This particular event will be held on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 May. The first World Championship Free Practice session will be on Friday at 4.40 pm with the S2 class, and bikes will run until 11.20 pm, the end of the S1 Time Practice. It is almost the same for Sunday’s races, starting at 4.55 pm with the S2.

On the other hand, the European series racers will be on their machines from Friday at 2.00 pm, while their first race will be on Saturday at 2.55 pm.

Right after the World and European Championships, racing will continue on Sunday with a special Trophy organized by Magic for Fun.

AMA: Currie opens season with dramatic win

With reigning Hot Wheels Supermoto Lites champion Cassidy Anderson having graduated up to the premier class, ’06 series runner-up Brandon Currie was tabbed by many the preseason favorite entering the new season.

He didn’t prove any prognosticators wrong in the 2007 season opener, picking up the Lites class win aboard his Graves Motorsports Yamaha YZ250F. However, it was anything but an easy victory for the young Californian, who found himself chasing Troy Lee Designs Honda’s new entry in the class, David Pingree, for the bulk of the race.

Pingree stormed into the lead from pole and held firm in the position until making a costly error in the dirt section with just two laps remaining, allowing Currie to dart past and steal the checkered flag.

“It was a battle out there,” Currie commented. “Ping was riding great and I was able to stay with him. The track was fast and you had to pick good lines. I am excited for the next round.”

A disappointed Pingree remarked after coming home second, “Everything was going great. I felt comfortable on the track and everything, but I made a mistake going into the dirt section and threw away the lead and had to play catch up.”

Husqvarna USA’s Adam Cini finished third, nearly managing to claim second as Pingree fought to rebound from his spill.

Scott’s Speed Shop’s Jamie Siever and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Matt Abbott finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Dalton Dimick (Kawasaki), Matt Pursley (Yamaha), Chad Cose (KTM), Troy Lee (Honda), and Andrew Hyder (Yamaha) completed the top ten.

Currie and Pingree will pick up their Lites showdown in two weeks time at Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ.

AMA:Jeff Ward scores important victory in Supermoto Opener

Just as with any new season, the 2007 AMA Supermoto opener at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in St. Louis, MO introduced the world to some new faces, was missing some familiar names no longer on the gird, and saw a number of established talents breaking in new liveries after switching seats during the offseason. However, no matter how much had changed, there was one very obvious constant: Troy Lee Designs Honda's Jeff Ward.

The two-time and defending series champion proved ageless once again, scoring an impressive victory in the '07 season kick-off after a spirited battle with Frenchman Adrien Chareyre, an imposing talent currently ranked second in the World Supermoto Championship.

Ward, 45, started the main event from second on the grid, lining up between polesitter Mark Burkhart on the Graves Yamaha YZ450F and Chareyre's Husqvarna. However, all three were forced to duck in behind Ward's former teammate, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Chris Fillmore, who stole the holeshot from the outside of Row 1 at the green light.

Chareyre, whose only previous AMA Supermoto experience was a pair of fourths claimed last year at Road America, quickly took control of the race, moving into first on the second lap and holding the position deep into the race. Ward finally found a way past on lap 12 of 15 and managed to maintain the spot to the checkered flag despite heavy pressure from the international star.

Afterwards Ward commented, "St Louis's track was fast, I had to be aggressive out there. Everything worked out great; I really liked the dirt section and was able to make up time in it. It feels great to get the first win of the season."

Ward's teammate, 2006 Lites champ Cassidy Anderson, picked up an impressive third to round out the podium, finishing ahead of Burkhart and Fillmore.

"I feel really good," Anderson remarked. "I struggled in practice, but I was able to put in a solid effort in the main event. I am racing the Supermoto class this year because I want to run with these fast guys. I could have defended my Lites title, but I think I'll progress as a better rider racing these guys in this class."

In the Lites race, Team TLD's newest member David Pingree did his best to hold off pre-season favorite and 2006 runner-up Brandon Currie for much of the race. Pingree stormed into the lead from the pole and held firm in the position until making a costly error in the dirt section with just two laps remaining, allowing Currie to dart past and steal the checkered flag.

A disappointed Pingree remarked after coming home second, "Everything was going great. I felt comfortable on the track and everything, but I made a mistake going into the dirt section and threw away the lead, and had to play catch up."

TLD namesake Troy Lee finished 9th on the day, just inside the top ten.

Congratulations to the entire team and all of our sponsors on a great opening round!

Round Two of the series will take place in two weeks time at Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ. For more information visit: www.amasupermoto.com.

AMA: Carlson claims first victory for Aprilia in Unlimited final

While Italian manufacturer Aprilia made an almost instant impact on the international Supermoto scene with the introduction of their twin-cylinder racing machines, it took just a bit longer to emerge a true force in the American series.

However, 2007 looks like it could very well be their breakout season, thanks to pairing of 2006 M&R Supermoto Unlimited champion Ben Carlson and the factory Aprilia RXV550.

Longtime HMC protégé Carlson quickly dispelled any thoughts that he would struggle in his manufacturer swap, as the Wisconsin native put on a dominant display at the front of Saturday's Unlimited contest. Starting from pole, Carlson dropped the field in short order and stormed away with a double-digit margin of victory.

Afterwards, the enthusiastic young ace said, “Capturing Aprilia’s first win feels amazing. I am very happy for this team and everyone involved. I have been working hard and I want to put a great season together for everyone here.”

The two men expected to give Carlson his biggest challenge, Frenchman David Baffeleuf on the factory Husqvarna and HMC’s up-and-comer John Lewis, had unlucky outings with neither making it deeper than 7 laps into the 12-lap affair.

Husaberg’s Robert Loire took maximum advantage of their misfortunes, claiming a tremendous second place finish.

“Its amazing, everything went right this weekend,” Loire said. “I want to thank everyone involved with the team, all the sponsors, my family, and the fans here in St Louis.”

BP Racing’s Josh Chisum claimed the final spot on the podium aboard his KTM 560SMR. “I am excited to have done this well. I rode better than I expected. Everything worked out today”

South African Brian Capper finished fourth on the factory KTM, followed by Aprilia team boss Darryl Atkins.

Motostrano-backed Travis Marks took sixth, followed by Frenchman Xavier Bellerophon, Tunguska Blast Husaberg’s Mike Bergman, Mark’s teammate Donald Wanat, and KTM-mounted Corey Hormes.

Carlson will carry his early-season advantage into Round 2 at Raceway Park, in Englishtown, NJ on June 2 & 3.

FIM: Gerald Delepine Married

2005 Supermoto World Champion Gerald Delepine made the most of the break between the opening World Championship race at Castelletto di Branduzzo and the second one in Torino, on May 26.

There was almost one free month, and the 37 year old Belgian born in Hermalle invested that much time in his family.

He flew to Las Vegas (USA) last week, and finally got married with his girlfriend –now wife- Laetitia. The couple will fly back to Europe soon, to enjoy their two kids: Oceane and Alan.

But the just married Delepine has not much time for a honeymoon, as he needs to show up in Italy by next week.

The FIM Supermoto Grand Prix of Italy is already in Spiderman’s sights, as the Husqvarna factory rider in the S2 class hopes to improve his current second place in the Championship.

The fight is close, because current leader Attilio Pignotti of KTM Italia Team Miglio has just four points more than Delepine.

It will be surely an interesting GP on Saturday night.

AMA: Aprilia USA and Atkins Global Management Announce 2007AMA Supermoto Championship Team

Factory Aprilia Rip-It Racing and the Aprilia SXV Debut May 19

NEW YORK, May 15, 2007 – Aprilia USA and Atkins Global Management, along with a world-class roster of sponsor partners led by Rip-It Energy Drink®, have teamed up to challenge the ‘establishment’ in the 2007 AMA Supermoto Championship.

Factory Aprilia Rip-It Racing team riders Ben Carlson, the 2006 AMA Supermoto Unlimited Class champion and team owner Darryl Atkins, the 2005 AMA Supermoto Unlimited Class runner-up will race the World Championship-winning Aprilia SXV 4.5 V-Twin in the Supermoto class for the first time.

Until 2007, AMA rules have only allowed multi-cylinder machines to compete in the unlimited class. For the 2007 season the V twin Aprilias will also compete in the 450 class. Wisconsin native Carlson and New Zealander Atkins will also return to contest the Unlimited Class with the Aprilia SXV 5.5, beginning with the season opener AMA Supermoto Championship races on May 29, at the St. Louis, MO Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.

“We’re really excited to expand our factory Supermoto race program for 2007,” says Rick Panettieri, brand manager, Aprilia USA. “The SXV 4.5 has proven to be very competitive in the FIM S2 Supermoto World Championship taking the title in 2006.

“All of us, from racers to sponsors, are focused on showcasing the Aprilia’s competitiveness on North American soil as well,” he says.

Aprilia’s race engineering heritage – the company has 32 on-road and off-road world championships on the books – has delivered a machine that’s designed to blend the benefits of increased horsepower with an exceptional chassis. "While the bike is heavier than the competition, the responsiveness of the SXV’s awesome chassis and the added horsepower give us a real unique advantage,” says Atkins. “We feel we maximized the 2006 season to get an in-depth understanding of this machine’s potential, and we’re excited about making the SXV as competitive on the North American circuit as it has been in the World Championship series.”

Ben Carlson cites the Factory Aprilia Rip-It Racing team dynamic as another factor in the team’s favor. Former rivals, Atkins and Carlson will compete for the podium as teammates for the first time. “Darryl has been a tough competitor in the past few years and I’m happy to join forces," says Carlson. “Add the opportunity to compete on a powerful new machine like the SXV, and it’s a real adrenaline rush. You can bet that we’re committed to making the most out of these strengths every time the tires touch the track.”

The Factory Aprilia Rip-It Racing team’s first outing on the SXV 4.5 and 5.5 was at the Stateline Supermoto Challenge - a season primer held in Primm, NV. Carlson took a seventh place finishing spot competing amongst some of the top riders in the 2007 AMA season, while Atkins was involved in a multi rider accident and did not finish the race.

The Factory Aprilia Rip-It Racing team is sponsored by Rip-It Energy Drink, Aprilia USA, Parts Unlimited, Bel-Ray Oils, Groove wines, Thor, Scott, Alpinestar, Asterisk, Ogio, ZLT, Dunlop, Beringer Brakes, K&N Filters, Pit Bull, Suzuka, Alpina Wheels, Renthal, Mechanix Wear, Regina Chains, Works Connection, Acberis and AF1 Racing.

AMA: Ward Still the Favorite

AMA Racing news release

Jeff Ward continues to defy the odds. Common knowledge would say that a racer of 45 would not be on the top of his game still winning championships against riders half his age. Yet as the 2007 AMA Supermoto Championship season approaches, Ward, the defending and two-time champ with Team Troy Lee Design Honda Red Bull, is still considered the rider to beat despite the fact that he will turn 46 in June.

Ward heads the list of top riders expected to make a run for this year’s premier class, the AMA Red Bull Supermoto. The series kicks off on May 19 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in St. Louis and concludes on Nov. 11, with the Duel at the Docks in Long Beach.

Ward, who won his first Supermoto title in 2004, earned back the title last year over Doug Henry of Graves Yamaha by a margin of 36 points (429-393). Ward lost the 2005 title in the final round to Jurgen Kunzel. Chris Fillmore finished 2006 ranked third with 356 points. Fillmore will ride for Monster Energy/Litz Racing/Kawasaki in 2007.

2006 will be a year Ward won’t soon forget. In August last year he became the oldest male gold medalist in X Games history when he won the Moto X event. After that Ward was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame. His AMA Supermoto title was icing on the cake.

“Motocross has been my life and it’s always going to be my life, and Supermoto is a part of it now too, helping it grow,” Ward said after winning the title last year in Long Beach. “My oldest son (Brandon) runs it well and he might be able to have a career over here if it takes off big enough. And my other son (Ayrton) wants to go road racing and this is a perfect venue to start that with small bikes and the pavement. It’s a good sport and I want to see it get bigger and bigger.”

Ward’s Troy Lee Designs teammate Cassidy Anderson, who won last year’s AMA Supermoto Lites title, will step up and join Ward in the premier Supermoto class. Anderson, of Provo, Utah, had an outstanding 2006 in Supermoto Lites. He won seven of the 10 rounds, opening the season with five-straight wins. He built a large lead in the series halfway through the year and held it to the final race. He will now face Ward and the rest of the Supermoto regulars head to head for the first time.

Mark Burkhart will uphold Yamaha honors in Supermoto with the Graves Yamaha squad. Burkhart has been a leading competitor in the class and he’s hoping to find the consistency that will bring him a championship. The Ohioan was the Lites champion in 2005.

HMC KTM will be a powerful squad again this year in the Supermoto class with British rider Kurt Nicoll and Australian up-and-comer Troy Herfoss.

Ben Carlson won the AMA Supermoto Unlimited Championship last year and now joins Factory Aprilia Rip It Racing’s Darryl Atkins riding the twin-cylinder Aprilia SXV. This year marks the first season the high-tech Aprilia 450cc V-Twin will be allowed to race in the Supermoto class and Carlson and Atkins should be factors, especially on tracks that feature bigger road racing sections. The duo will race Aprilia 550s in the AMA Supermoto Unlimited class as well.

David Baffeleuf will run under the LA Fuel GP Husqvarna banner. Micky Dymond is back riding for All Access Honda. Cary Hart and Tyler Evans have teamed up to form the all new Team Rockstar Hart & Huntington Tattoo Co., along with other premier class top riders including Steve Drew and Mike Metzger.

Sadly, there will be a big hole in the starting grids of this year’s races. Multi-time AMA Champion Doug Henry will not race due to serious injuries suffered in a Supermoto accident on March 4, during Daytona Bike Week activities. Henry is one of the premier stars of the series and his presence on the track will be sorely missed.

The AMA Hot Wheels Supermoto Lites class promises to be wide open this year with last year’s runner up Brandon Currie the pre-season favorite back with the Graves Yamaha team. David Pingree impressed everyone with his Lites victory in Long Beach last year and it earned him a coveted ride with Team Troy Lee Designs Honda Red Bull, where he’ll ride alongside team owner Troy Lee. Dalton Dimick and Matt Abbott will race for the newly formed Monster Energy/Litz Racing/Kawasaki team.

Ben Carlson will be back defending his AMA PPG Supermoto Unlimited presented by M&R Products No. 1 plate, but this year riding a twin-cylinder Aprilia. “I’m looking forward to riding with Aprilia,” said Carlson. “I’m sure there’s going to be some great competition in the class.”

Team HMC KTM will be a powerhouse in AMA Supermoto Unlimited class with Troy Herfoss, Kurt Nicoll and young gun John Lewis. Gary Trachy and David Baffeleuf are slated to run the big bikes for Husqvarna.

The Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in St. Louis will host the AMA Supermoto Championship season opener on May 19. For more information visit www.stlouissupermoto.com.

Q&A: What Tires Are Best For Supermoto?

We at Motostrano are asked the question a lot: "What Tires Are Best For Supermoto?"

The answer of course is two fold and multi-faceted. In general, we recommend trying various tires and going with what you like best. For street duty we like the Continental
Contiforce SM
tire above any tire out there for for standard street riding, the occasional track day and even a race or two. The Conti is made in a 120x17 front and either a 150x17 or 160x17 rear. The Conti is an H rated tire, meaning it's made for the average speeds and weights in line with most Supermoto bikes, unlike your average sportbike tire like a Michelin Pilot Power or Dunlop Qualifer where the tire would be Z rated for speeds up to 190 mph and for the weight of a bike much heavier than your SM. This translates directly to quicker warm-up times for the H rated tire on your Supermoto, better tire wear and better handling. The Conti SM is designed from the ground up as a Supermoto tire, where others are designed for entirely different kinds of riding. The other major plus for the Conti is the price. At just shy of $250 a set, they're hard to beat.

For racers, Motostrano's preferred tire is the Dunlop slick. Dunlop offers both 17 and 16.5 sized fronts in a variety of compounds. Dunlop rears come in 155, 165 and now 170 sizes for the big fat 5-inch rear rims. Dunlop also offers rain tread tires for wet weather racing. Dunlop has put an enormous amount of energy and money into R&D to come up with the best all around Supermoto race tire for the most common track set-ups of between 80/20 and 60/40 dirt to street ratios. Both in the USA and the World Supermoto Championship, Dunlop is the dominant brand you'll see in the pits and this is an important fact to consider. The last thing you want from your tire is scarcity. The greatest tire in the world sucks if you can't get it. Most of the tire makers out there these days offer some type of Supermoto spec tire that is offered to both pro and amateur racers but if you're an amateur racer you could run into shortages. Dunlop has a great supply network, with distributors on both coasts. You'll see a Dunlop tire truck at every Pro Supermoto race (at least here in the USA) where you'll have access to tires at the track, as well as product support.

FIM: Husqvarna off to Good Start

The first round of the 2007 Supermoto World Championship held in Castelletto di Branduzzo last week end was quite successful for the Husqvarna CH Racing team.

Victory was missing, but the team, riders and bikes got important results for the next championship’s rounds. Husqvarna got the second and third places in S1 class (450) thanks to a brilliant performance of the Chareyre Brothers, while Belgian rider Gerald Delepine was second in S2 class (600).

In S1 class, both Adrien and Thomas proved to be young but enough experienced to chase the week end winner Thierry Van Den Bosch. Adrien got two second placed preceding in both heats the younger brother Thomas on third position. Two bad starts in the back lines conditioned Max Manzo performance who was back to the racing right last week end after a pause to recover form the injury occurred during the first Italian round.

In S2 class Gerald Delepine had an hard week end in which was constantly in the fight with his rivals. Gerald wasn’t 100% physically due to a pain to his back, so the rider could not go any further than third position. He’s now second in the provisional classification and 4 points from leader Attiglio Pigniotti.

Overall classifications:

S1: 1. Van Den Bosch (Aprilia) p. 50, 2. Adrien Chareyre (Husqvarna) p. 44, 3. Thomas Chareyre (Husqvarna) p. 40.
S2: 1.Pignotti (KTM) p. 44, 2. Delepine (Husqvarna) p. 40, 3. Iddon (Aprilia ) p. 37.

FIM: Boris Chambon at Castelletto di Branduzzo

Source: http://www.borischambon.com/
The first event of the FIM Supermoto World Championship took place on the beautiful circuit of Castelletto di Branduzzo in Italy. The weather was good and there were 8000 people at this first GP.

Boris Chambon had some problems during the week-end, due especially to the youth of the Team, and to the little time he had to prepare compared to the competitors.

Saturday, for the time practice, Boris clocked the sixteenth fastest time. Boris complained about a problem to his front fork.

Sunday, for the first race, Boris got a so and so start (sixteenth), then moved back up and arrived to the twelfth place. In the second race, he started from the fifteenth position, and finished eleventh. In the two races, overall, Boris grabbed the eleventh position.

Besides that, it was a good weekend as the Team and Boris fixed the technical problems, and can now improve the bike. The Team has some good information to work with for one month, in order to give Boris a competitive bike, matching his riding.

CMRC: Team Jabouri Racing

MISSISSAUGA, ON -- Running the National SuperMoto series wasn't enough for Mississauga's Adam Jabouri, 15, so he decided to add road racing to the calendar. He will be running the RACE Super Series regional road racing series (www.shannonville.com) and the national SuperMoto series (www.cmrcquebec.com).

With round 1 of the RACE series coming up this weekend, Team Jabouri Racing has been busy testing its newly acquired Kawasaki ZX-6RR. An open test session a couple of weeks ago allowed Adam to get used to riding on pavement, as well as dial in his new motorcycle.

"The test went very well," commented Adam, "the bike worked perfectly. The suspension was on the stiff side, but we've since replaced the rear spring with a lighter one. I'm really looking forward to this season. I'm excited to start road racing, and the SuperMoto schedule looks great."

In SuperMoto competition, Adam will be racing in the premier PRO Open, PRO 450 and PRO 250 classes. Kawasaki's new KX450F and 250F have proven to be very fast in testing.

"We tested at Stop 48 last weekend and everything went well. The new five-speed gearbox on the KX450 will be a big advantage this year," said team principle Louey Jabouri.

FIM: 1st Supermoto World Championship win for Iddon

The Auto Cycle Union has great pleasure in congratulating one of the Country’s top Supermoto riders, Christian Iddon on his first World Championship race win.

Christian, aged 22, from Stockport is possibly the Country’s most experienced Supermoto rider, switching from motocross when the first national Supermoto championship was organised. He has competed in the FIM World Supermoto Championship and always been a very strong contender for race wins since 2004, securing 9th place in the S2 Championship, 2005 saw Christian move up to the S1 Class, finish 6th including 4 podium places. Improving further again in 2006 gave him 4th place in the World Championship, with 10 podium finishes, including 3 Runner Up spots.

For 2007 Christian is obviously intent on being one of the main contenders for Championship honours and Round 1 on 29th April in Italy, after a disappointing first race 9th, Christian made amends in Race 2 securing his first World Championship win and an Overall 3rd place in the Championship standings.

A further two British competitors also secured points in Italy, Matt Winstanley for 7th place in Race 2 and Sam Warren, 14th Race 1 and 20th in Race 2.

The three riders will be back in World Championship action at Round 2, Supermoto Grand Prix of Italy in Torino on 26th May 2007.

FIM: SuperMoto World Championship to race under lights

The second Grand Prix of the FIM SuperMoto World Championship promises to be one to remember as the kings of slide take it into the night as the championship hosts it's first ever night time round. By: Garry Morrow

The Oval Lingotto in Torino, which hosted ice-skating in the Olympic Winter Games in 2006, will host the ground breaking round on May 26 and is sure to expose Supermoto to a much larger and wider demographic with the Oval Lingotto being only 500 metres away from Torino’s city centre.

The circuit will be more than 1200 metre long, including a 300 metre long off road section, that will be a key factor in the result of the race. The average width will be 8 metres. The top class facilities will include a restaurant, and three bars.

SuperMoto will be the main show of this event, but the organisers have found some room also for some Motocross and Quad Freestyle shows. Top freestylers will try their best tricks, such as the amazing back-flip, to show the crowd what they are made of.

"This is fantastic news for the FIM SuperMoto World Championship," CMS/FIM President Dr. Wolfgang Srb enthused. "For the first time there will be a night event. The location, right in the centre of Torino, adds an additional value for the fans. I am very grateful to all the partners who made this happen.”

"Finally our dream of bringing SuperMoto to city centres and to prestigious venues is coming true; SuperMoto is a city bike, and must be raced in cities," said Youthstream President Giuseppe Luongo. "I am sure the thousands of fans coming to this edition will experience a magic moment in a fantastic atmosphere, 100% adrenaline. We believe the Grand Prix of Italy will be an absolute success, and we would like to thank Giorgio Foi and Danilo Boccadolce for their organization.”
