With reigning Hot Wheels Supermoto Lites champion Cassidy Anderson having graduated up to the premier class, ’06 series runner-up Brandon Currie was tabbed by many the preseason favorite entering the new season.
He didn’t prove any prognosticators wrong in the 2007 season opener, picking up the Lites class win aboard his Graves Motorsports Yamaha YZ250F. However, it was anything but an easy victory for the young Californian, who found himself chasing Troy Lee Designs Honda’s new entry in the class, David Pingree, for the bulk of the race.
Pingree stormed into the lead from pole and held firm in the position until making a costly error in the dirt section with just two laps remaining, allowing Currie to dart past and steal the checkered flag.
“It was a battle out there,” Currie commented. “Ping was riding great and I was able to stay with him. The track was fast and you had to pick good lines. I am excited for the next round.”
A disappointed Pingree remarked after coming home second, “Everything was going great. I felt comfortable on the track and everything, but I made a mistake going into the dirt section and threw away the lead and had to play catch up.”
Husqvarna USA’s Adam Cini finished third, nearly managing to claim second as Pingree fought to rebound from his spill.
Scott’s Speed Shop’s Jamie Siever and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Matt Abbott finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Dalton Dimick (Kawasaki), Matt Pursley (Yamaha), Chad Cose (KTM), Troy Lee (Honda), and Andrew Hyder (Yamaha) completed the top ten.
Currie and Pingree will pick up their Lites showdown in two weeks time at Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ.
